Armed Forces Day

This day is a day to salute to the men and woman in all branches of the service. Initially, each branch of the military had their own day of celebration. But, on August 31, 1949 then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950.

On Saturday, May 15, yellow cards were hung from the lamp posts on the Square for
Armed Forces Day. This will be done to show our community's support for our troops from Union County.

Ed Reed, President of the Union County Historical Society, opened the ceremony, noting that this was Blairsville's second observance of
Armed Forces Day. The names of those serving at the present were read and displayed. Patriotic music was played from the Clock Tower bells before and after the program.
